¿Who Are We?

Mercarne is one of the main beef processors in the Dominican Republic, standing out for its commitment to quality and innovation in the meat industry.

History

Mercarne is a model meat company, founded by our president, Industrial Engineer José O. Álvarez Payán, who has more than 30 years of experience in the meat business. He is the descendant of a multi-generation livestock family, headed by his father, Dr. José Manuel Álvarez, a Spanish veterinarian who emigrated to the Dominican Republic in 1960. Dr. Álvarez developed his passion for livestock farming and his vocation for service to the community, organizing and educating the country's livestock sector in innovative techniques such as artificial insemination, pregnancy testing, stationary mating, paddock rotation, as well as the organization of regional livestock auctions and fairs. These contributions, along with his vocation for service, made him a national livestock leader who is much loved in the sector.

Don José Manuel instilled in his children a love of the countryside, taking them from an early age to the farms and to many of the livestock activities that he organized. In 1978, the Álvarez family founded a small slaughterhouse called El Corral, S.A., with the aim of selling carcass beef to the main supermarkets in Santo Domingo, becoming one of the main plants of the time.

Our president, Mr. José O. Álvarez, after graduating, ventured into different businesses. However, in 2013 he decided to fully dedicate himself to the meat business, building a modern beef processing plant that meets all the international standards and demands of the meat industry.

Since its founding, Mercarne has been in continuous innovation in technology, infrastructure and process controls. This commitment to excellence and quality allowed us to reach a new milestone in 2022: the export of Dominican beef to the United States. This achievement not only underlines the quality of our products, but also places Mercarne on the international map, demonstrating that Dominican meat can compete in the most demanding markets in the world.

All this, added to the great knowledge of the market of our founder and the continuous training of our human resources, has made Mercarne the market leader and a national and international reference in the beef industry. We are proud to bring the flavor and quality of Dominican meat to new frontiers, contributing to the economic growth of the country and reaffirming our commitment to excellence.
